“One looks back with appreciation to the brilliant teachers, but with gratitude to those who touched our human feelings. The curriculum is so much necessary raw material, but warmth is a vital element for the growing plant and for the soul of the child.”- Carl Jung
My interest in Elementary Education dates back to when I was a young girl. I have always wanted to be a teacher for as long as I can remember. I loved to come home from school and play school. I was very eager to learn. I was fortunate enough to go to a private school for twelve years of my life. I was very lucky to have the teachers I did in those twelve years. They were always willing to help when it was needed. These teachers have set the bar high for me and what I want to become as a teacher. In my various experiences in the urban classrooms I really enjoy being able to help the students learn something new every day. I want to be able to have a special connection with my students and help them meet their goals. A good teacher needs to knowledgeable, alive, patient, committed, and I feel like I have each of these qualities. I am a very energetic and patient person when it comes to helping children. Being patient is going to be the most important quality I am going to need because being a teacher is very eventful at times.
I strongly believe in the Progressivism theory. I feel like education should focus on the child as a whole rather than the content. Each child is going to learn differently. I believe that children have the right to be educated no matter what the circumstance is. Children have unique characteristics that make them who they are. They should have an equal opportunity to learn based on their own special needs and abilities. I believe I should emphasize critical thinking and problem solving and foster continuous growth. The world is quickly changing and I, as an educator need to be able to prepare the students for this change.
In order to educate my students I am going to give them real life situations. They are going to need to be able to problem solve on their own. I am going to encourage my students to ask various questions about any topic they would like to discuss. I feel that children learn best by doing. I will have my students work in groups to gain social skills to help them in the future. I am also going to encourage my students to set daily goals for themselves. I feel it is very important for a student to expect something out of themselves and be rewarded when they reach these goals.
I look forward to becoming an elementary teacher. My passion for kids cannot be summed up into words. I am hoping to make a difference in some children’s lives like my teachers did.
